Scalable Algorithms for Constructing Balanced Spanning Trees on System-Ranked Process Groups

چکیده
Current implementations of process groups (subcommunicators) have non-scalable (O(group size)) memory footprints and even worse time complexities for setting up communication. We propose systemranked process groups, where member ranks are picked by the runtime system, as a cheaper and faster alternative for a subset of collective operations (barrier, broadcast, reduction, allreduce). This paper presents two distributed algorithms for balanced, k-ary spanning tree construction over system-ranked process groups obtained by splitting a parent group. Our schemes have much smaller memory footprints and also perform better, even at modest process counts. We demonstrate performance results up to 131, 072 cores of BlueGene/P.

Distributed Algorithms for Constructing Balanced Spanning Trees on System-ranked Process Groups
Parallel programs often express operations on a subset (process group) of all the participating processes or ranks. Subcommunicators in MPI are an example of such process groups. Often, these process groups are used only for simple collective communication (broadcast, reduction, allreduce) over the members of the process group. Current algorithms to create process groups tend to be centralized ...
متن کاملSocial network sampling using spanning trees
Due to the large scales and limitations in accessing most online social networks, it is hard or infeasible to directly access them in a reasonable amount of time for studying and analysis. Hence, network sampling has emerged as a suitable technique to study and analyze real networks. The main goal of sampling online social networks is constructing a small scale sampled network which preserves t...
متن کاملDimension-exchange algorithms for token distribution on tree-connected architectures
Load balancing on a multi-processor system involves redistributing tasks among processors so that each processor has roughly the same amount of work to perform. The token-distribution problem is a static variant of the load balancing problem for the case in which the workloads in the system cannot be divided arbitrarily; that is, where each token represents an atomic element of work. A scalable...

متن کاملOptimal Self-healing of Smart Distribution Grids Based on Spanning Trees to Improve System Reliability
In this paper, a self-healing approach for smart distribution network is presented based on Graph theory and cut sets. In the proposed Graph theory based approach, the upstream grid and all the existing microgrids are modeled as a common node after fault occurrence. Thereafter, the maneuvering lines which are in the cut sets are selected as the recovery path for alternatives networks by making ...
